Major Bill Donahue, a brave and selfless U.S. Marine who served his country with honor during the Vietnam War, and later went on to become a successful and accomplished business leader, passed away on February 5th, 2024. His unwavering dedication to his country, family, and community will be deeply missed.
He was born on January 31, 1943, in the mountains of Southwestern Pennsylvania. He was the eldest of five and the only son in the family. Major Donahue dropped out of high school in his junior year to enlist in the United States Marine Corps where he found his true calling. During the Vietnam War, he served for 44 months and 9 days in combat, earning several Purple Hearts, the Silver Star, the Bronze Star with Combat “V,” the Navy/Marine Corps Commendation Medal with Combat “V,” three Air Medals (one with the Combat “V”), four Navy Achievement Medals (two with the Combat “V”), and numerous other accolades for his bravery and service. He rose to the rank of Master Sergeant before serving as an officer, and later received a direct commission as a second lieutenant, transitioning to Marine Aviation. He became the first below the rank of Captain to be awarded the Marine Corps Aviation Ground Officer of the Year in 1977. After serving continuously for 29 years, 1 month, and 1 day, Major Donahue was medically retired from the Marine Corps. He had an undergraduate degree from Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (magna cum laude) and a master’s degree from the University of Southern California.
Major Donahue was not only a dedicated military officer, but also a passionate advocate for justice. In 2005, he witnessed the unfair treatment of Marines who were falsely accused of crimes in Iraq, which prompted him to establish United American Patriots. One of the organization’s key initiatives, the “Warrior Fund,” provides resources and support to service members who have been wrongfully accused of crimes during combat and unjustly incarcerated. Through UAP’s legal assistance, many of our Nation’s Warriors have received the justice they deserve, including discharge upgrades, parole hearings, and Presidential Pardons. Since its inception, UAP has supported numerous service members in their legal proceedings, ensuring that their rights are protected and that they receive a fair trial.
The late Major Donahue was a remarkable individual who left an indelible mark on the military community through his unwavering courage, selfless service, and steadfast commitment to justice. He was a true defender of the Constitution and dedicated his life to ensuring that those who protect it receive the support and respect they deserve. Major Donahue’s passing has left a deep void, but his legacy will continue to inspire and motivate generations to come. Major Donahue was laid to rest on Thursday, February 8th in Greensboro, North Carolina, where he was honored by his fellow servicemen and women and mourned by his loved ones.
